How Long Before the Wedding Should We Book an Officiant?

 

June through September are the busiest months.  I typically book 10-12 months in advance.

If you decide to marry quickly or elope, call me for availabilities.

​

Your wedding date and time is confirmed once a deposit of half the fee is paid.  This can be done either in cash, e-transfer, certified cheque or money order.  Most couples make their payment by e-transfer.  Tibby will go over a service agreement with you, outlining her services and the agreed upon fee and wedding details.

To prepare for your meeting, I ask that you bring your questions and your wonderful ceremony ideas.  Once we have agreed to move forward with my service, I provide you with ongoing email or phone communication.

How Long Does a Typical Ceremony Take?

​

A ceremony takes approximately twenty five to thirty minutes from the entrance, the ceremony, the signing, and the recessional.  Some couples ask for “short and sweet” so a ceremony could be shorter.

I always remind couples to be on time, I may have another ceremony scheduled following yours.

What Time Can you Expect the Officiant Arrive?

​

I arrive half an hour before the ceremony.  I make arrangements ahead of time to confirm the venue directions.

​

What if the Couple Wish to Write Your Own Vows?

 

This is your wedding ceremony, I will work with you to include all the legal aspects required during the ceremony should you wish to write your own vows.  In addition, children are welcome to participate, their roles being age appropriate.

What about a Wedding Rehearsal?

​

Most couples, if they choose to have a rehearsal, do so without the Officiant.  Arrangements can be made to rehearse with me, at an additional cost which we will discuss.

Purchasing Your Marriage Licence;

 

You can purchase your license at your local municipal office/city hall. You must complete the application which you can get at the municipal office or print it from this website or your municipal office website. The licence is good for 90 days from the time you obtain it.

​

Typically, you are able to do this all on the same day.  Once you receive your marriage licence, it is important that you keep this in the brown envelope that is provided.  This is the envelope and licence you will give Tibby prior to the marriage ceremony.  Your license is valid for three months.

 

If you or your fiancé have been divorced outside of Canada, there are additional documents necessary so please inquire at your municipal office well in advance of your wedding date.

Must You Change Your Name in Ontario after the Ceremony?

​

It is not a legal requirement to take your spouses name when you marry.  If you choose to change your name, you can assume your spouse's last name and start using it.

​

You will inform your employer, credit card companies, banks, and other institutions that you’ve married and will be changing your name.  You can photocopy your ‘record of solemnization of marriage’ you receive from your Officiant at the ceremony.

​

This is proof that you are married for most things.  However, other agencies require the original “Record of Solemnization” or, the “Marriage Certificate”.

Following your ceremony, Tibby will send your completed, signed Marriage License to the Office of the Registrar General to complete the marriage registration for the Province of Ontario.

Services included in your Fee;

 

Tibby will review all the elements your fee includes when you sign your agreement.  These include the consultation, scheduling, communications, ongoing drafting and reviewing the ceremony, travel and mileage and legal paperwork.  Your Officiant is Licensed and you are encouraged to confirm this through the Ontario Humanist Society website and the Office of the Registrar General of Ontario.
